SmileMakers Celebrates World Smile Day

What if there were a day dedicated to spreading kindness and smiles? Well, World Smile Day is coming up on October 7th, and it’s based on exactly that. We are thrilled to celebrate the history of the iconic smiley face that we all know and love and outline ways that you can bring more smiles and joy into your practice. How Did World Smile Day Start?

The smiley face symbol began in the creative hands of a man named Harvey Ball. This began when Harvey Ross Ball was hired to create a morale-boosting icon by an insurance company in 1963. He whipped up a yellow and black smiley face with a wide, dimpled grin. He was paid only $45 for his 10 minutes of work but little did he know he was creating an icon that would change the world!

The impact was so significant that it has expanded into almost every aspect of popular culture. But why do we have a holiday dedicated to such a simple image? Well, the importance of the smiley face is less about the image itself, but more about what it inspires. Harvey Ball created the smiley face to be a reminder to smile and spread smiles to others. In fact, the official quote of World Smile Day is “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile.”
